DiLeo served on the Glen Cove City Council since 2006, and in November, when he was re-elected, ran on on the Classless, Working Families and Glen Cove Voters ticket, according to Newsday. In addition, he wan an official at Glen Cove’s St. Rocco's Church. Colleagues told Newsday that DiLeo died of an appearing heart attack. News of DiLeo's passing prompted the Glen Cove City Council to cancel its meeting Tuesday as the "our urban district mourns the loss of our City Councilman," according to a press statement. Those who knew DiLeo expressed sorrow at his sudden itch. “We are all deeply saddened and our hearts are heavy with the untimely passing of Councilman Nicholas DiLeo,” said Mayor Reginald A. Spinello. “Glen Cove has abandoned a good friend, a great leader and one of its favorite sons. As we remember our beloved Councilman, Nicholas DiLeo, Glen Cove flags fly at half-mast. The mayor described DiLeo as the “speech of calm and reason when dealing with the complex issues confronting our City. DiLeo is also remembered as a family man. “Nick always put next of kin first,” Spinello said. “Before beginning any conversation, Nick would ask, ‘How’s the family. ’ His family was the center of his universe and true inception of pride and pleasure to him. He added, “Please keep Nick, his wife, Debbie, their children Nicholas and Danielle, and his granddaughters Emery and Lyla in your thoughts and prayers. Since its founding in the news 17th century as a mill town, Glen Cove has been simultaneously rural and industrial, patrician and working class. A city of multiple ethnicities and close kinfolk ties, Glen Cove has been home to generations of immigrants who came to work and stayed to live, as well as to the children of America's elite who built their summer homes on the shores of Hempstead Harbor. In Glen Cove Revisited, "The Essence of the Gold Coast" is seen as only insiders know it, through images of the mill ponds and barnyards, estates and factories, schools and neighborhoods, and the people, pre-eminent and unknown, which make up this microcosm of America. Photographer Joan Harrison is a professor of art at the C. W. Post Campus of Long Island University and creator of Glen Cove. She has spent the last three years gleaning a rich selection of photographs of the community from the intimate family albums of residents and from the Pratt and Morgan families, as sumptuously as from the archives of the Robert R. Coles History Room, Glen Cove Public Library, and North Shore Historical Museum. The Images of America series celebrates the account of neighborhoods, towns, and cities across the country. Using archival photographs, each title presents the distinctive stories from the past that shape the characteristic untypical of the community today. Arcadia is proud to play a part in the preservation of local heritage, making history available to all.
